New & Neat

Slightly Foxed

A woman wrapping a book.

Enjoy the delights of second hand book shopping at Slightly Foxed. The first retailer to establish itself in the Victorian prescient over 20 years ago, the owners became pioneers of this now thriving shopping district

Steampunk HQ

The building.

If you can’t get enough of the Steampunk phenomena that is taking over Oamaru, then visit the Steampunk HQ. It’s hard to miss with a steam train out front (put a gold coin in the box and watch the train come alive – although this is best viewed at night)

Jessie Roberts’ Store

The lolly display

New Zealand’s most distinguished author, Janet Frame spent much of her childhood in Oamaru at 56 Eden Street and her final resting place can be found in the Greta Street Cemetery. In volume one of her autobiography To the Is-Land she writes about her time in Oamaru: “I wanted an imagination that would inhabit a world of fact, descend like a shining light upon the ordinary life of Eden Street”

Oamaru Farmers Market

Reusable bags.

No town would be complete without its very own farmers market. Oamaru is no different. Held every Sunday in the beautiful Loan and Merc building during winter and outside by the harbour in the Summer, expect to find quality produce on offer at the Oamaru Farmers Market

The Libratory Steampunk Art Gallery

Outside of the Libratory.

Something unique to Oamaru is the intense popularity of the Steampunk movement. Introduced to the town in 2009, Steampunk is a sub-culture of science fiction and fantasy that involves envisioning the future based on the Victorian perspective of life. It’s also a rebellious attitude against society’s preference for plastic and the disposable way of life

Whitestone Cheese

The cafe.

Cheese, oh glorious cheese. All your cheese fantasies will be realised once you step into the Whitestone Cheese deli / café located close to the roaring South Pacific ocean. Producing award winning artisan cheeses made with 100% natural ingredients, your choices include soft whites, semi-soft, blue, feta and sheep’s milk cheeses
