Oddfellows is a popular café situated in an old hall of the same name, adjourning the Hummingbird Roastery where Fairtrade organic beans are roasted and shipped to cafés around the country. The food is seriously delicious (try the haloumi open sandwich!) and the coffee brand’s imagery and name (the hummingbird) has strong symbolic meaning and spiritual significance, particularly for Christchurch. The speed and movement of the bird as it hovers over flowers while drinking nectar, teaches us not to dwell on our past, but to move forward, savouring each moment and appreciate the things we love. Quite appropriate, we think. It’s just a shame that the café is closed on a Sunday.
