Just down the road from C1, Gapfiller’s RAD bikes is another amazing project to emerge out of the Festival of Transitional Architecture, typical of the ground-up community-oriented initiatives flourishing in Christchurch at the moment.
Brainchild of Richard Sewell, the RAD, or ‘Recycle a Dunger’ space provides a workshop, tools, and even some spare parts, to maintain, repair and restore your bicycle, along with friendly volunteers on hand to offer expert advice and assistance. As well as helping to keep the city’s cycle fleet healthy, RAD also runs a programme restoring unwanted and neglected bikes into good working order to donate to Christchurch’s vulnerable and under privileged.
By leveraging a number of valuable but under-utilised resources, RAD is working to build community resilience, social capital, while supporting sustainable transport, and generally making Christchurch a more awesome place, so go in and get involved.
