For the art lovers amongst us, The Jewel and The Jeweller in New Plymouth’s Quarter Bank Prencinct is a treasure trove of delights. Hidden away down a short boardwalk - neighbouring Billow bakery - the container studio is the vision of practising jewellers Jennifer Laracy and Sam Kelly.

The pair excel in their craft. Having both exhibited works nationally and internationally, and after connecting over a shared love of contemporary jewellery, they decided to create a new art experience in their own backyard. The result is striking; bright yellow walls inside add instant impact and let the range of contemporary jewels by 26 leading makers from Aotearoa, sing on the colourful backdrop. Cabinets brim with distinctive jewellery pieces ripe for scoping with beady eyes. You’re likely to see one of the duo tinkering around in the studio while you browse, and they’ll be more than happy to oblige if you want to try anything on or learn more about the jewellery artist.

If you’ve ever been curious about the techniques and skills required to design your own jewellery pieces, you’ll want to book yourself into a workshop at The Jewel and The Jeweller quick smart. Jennifer and Sam offer a variety of classes ranging from one-day workshops to evening social club events. Their modern stylish workshop can host up to eight students at a time, and no previous experience is required as they’re on hand to guide you through every step of the process.
