A quaint, charismatic little store that has called Jackson Street home for decades, The Dutch Shop is a perennial favourite among Petone locals and visitors alike - particularly for those with a penchant for cheese.

Resplendent in the vibrant colours of the Dutch flag, the shop windows offer a tantalising glimpse of the cosy interior within, which is packed from wall to wall with Dutch and other European goodies. Pick-and-mix lolly containers dominate the island at the heart of the store, while Dutch biscuits, liquorice (both sweet and salted varieties), and other snacks line the shelves everywhere you look. Perhaps the centrepiece of the place, however, is the majestic cheese cabinet by the counter, boasting a delectable array of around 80 local and European varieties.

Pry yourself away from the food, if you can, and you’ll discover an equally impressive range of classy European homeware and giftware you can peruse. Browse the beautiful selection of contemporary Delft Blue pottery, or treat yourself to a sturdy BK Dutch oven to take your home cooking to the next level.

A true home away from home for Wellington’s Dutch expats, as well as a fascinating store to browse no matter where your roots lie, The Dutch Shop is a must-visit on any day trip to Petone. There’s plenty to explore, and the friendly team are always up for a chat - both in Dutch and in English.
