You’re in good hands at Hataitai’s very own neo-Japanese paradise: BambuchiSan. The outside world and street noise it carries feel a mile away, a bright green ‘Bambuchi’ neon shines from the far end of the room and bold murals painted by local artist Pierre Hadlow adorn the walls. With a delicious menu to suit every diet, this is one of those spots you can really settle in and while away the hours. Leave your phone at home.

The name comes from owner Lindsay’s beloved ‘Smuchi Bambuchi’, the family dog—it’s fun to say and easy to remember. There’s plenty of space indoors and out, with thirty seats in the main dining room and a beautiful garden courtyard in the back. There is also a private room available for dinners or functions with capacity for 25 people, super rare in the small suburb, and one of BambuchiSan’s great drawcards.

Sharing plates are the order of the day at this joint, so pick a few options from the menu and create your own smorgasbord right there at the table and sample a bit of everything with your friends. If you feel like imbibing, give the sake tasting plate a try, there are also Japanese and local brews and cocktails, plus a range of wines from around Aotearoa and further afield.

There are daily specials, including BYO on Wednesdays, or if you’re pushed for time, they have a takeaway menu available too. All of the food looks as good as it tastes, preceded by the wafting aroma of fresh tempura and other goodies emanating from the kitchen.

The clean fit out features stools made from recycled refrigerant canisters, and solid wood-and-steel tables, with the centrepiece surely being the impressive bar made from Balinese hardwood. Its copper top is absolutely pristine and really makes for a warm atmosphere with an air of elegance. Stop by and take some time away from the world to properly indulge.
